The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
