Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
